I HATE THE NIGERIAN SPIRIT

Nigerians are known to be resilient and dogged. With a “never say die” attitude.

Nigerians are natural-born survivors who believe they can make it no matter what the prevailing circumstances and conditions might be. In fact, there is a joke that if you find yourself any where in the earth surface and you don’t find Nigerian there, you better leave that place because it means the place is inhabitable.

We have unrivalled survival instinct and an undying hope that we can make it out of any situation.

That’s the Nigerian spirit.

Nigeria has one of the highest number of comedians and well-known entertainers. They make jokes about almost everything.
They take the worst tragedies and make funny jokes out of them.

That’s the Nigerian spirit.

The spirit that turns to the Supreme being and ask for divine intervention for every situation.
The spirit that believes that no matter what happens ‘Las Las we go dey okay’.

The spirit that finds a way to be happy always.
That’s the Nigerian spirit.

But I hate the Nigerian spirit. I’d rather have a spirit that makes a people stand up for themselves and take their destiny in their own hands. A spirit that sees injustice and evil and address them as such instead of seeing them as materials to make the next rib-cracking joke from.

I’d rather have a spirit that is not contented with just ‘minding my own business’ and being happy.
That’s the spirit I want. Not the NIGERIAN SUFFERING-AND-SMILING SPIRIT.

I HATE THE NIGERIAN SPIRIT.
