The Role of Focus in Youth Development in Omuma Local Government Area, Rivers State
Being a Paper Presented by Nweke Emmanuel Onyekachi (ACIPMN/ACIA/MNI/MABEN/MABS) on the Occasion of Oganihi Omuma Forum (OOF) End of Year Get-together held at the ACI Centre, Eberi, on the 25th Day of December, 2019.

My dear people of OOF I thank you immensely for the privilege to render once more in your altar of community charity. You are God sent to our beloved Omuma land.
Introduction
The need for the chosen topic in today’s occasion is born out of the teeming issues surrounding our youths in the 21st century Omuma and by extension, Nigeria. So many youths have abandoned pursuing reputable course of life for frivolities and ephemerals. Focus according to the Advanced Oxford Dictionary (7th Edition) refers to the state or quality of having or producing clear visual definition. A clear vision is required to determine a destination in any journey. In the same vein, determining destiny depends on focus. Focus occurs in the manner in which we prepare for the future, pursue a career, volunteer and retire.
PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE
Preparing for the future will imply the way we run our lives as youths. Though so many fly the alibi of poor parenting or parents and yet so many notables meandered through the thorns of poverty and became stars. It is all about the heart and not the height of your parents. It is about the intention you have crafted in your mind’s eye and not the nativity. It is the you in you and not the immediate milieu.
Considering our highly inundatedly ‘theorified’ social contents, this paper prefers to be practically illustrative. There have been excuses parents not having sufficient money to sponsor youth education. I make bold to say that such excuses though plausible do not stand a lasting testimony. Any Omuma youth who intends to learn a trade or acquire higher education can do so anyways. There are so many economic salvages if considered with the sense of focus. I’m not an advocate of pride and unearned ego and so I will not sympathise with any suggestion.
For example, ‘akpu’, ‘utra’ sells N100 per wrap in any restaurant in Aba, Port Harcourt, Onitsah and it is sold at N20 per wrap in Omuma. A swift business that will be if considered. Our garri which is not in any rivalry with any other brand, sells at 2,700 per bag in Omuma and well over 6,000 in the city. Our palm oil, best in the world, sells at 3,000 per 20litres drum in Omuma and sells at 5,500 per 20 litres in the city. Imagine the whooping profit margin! Initial capital issue can be conquered by building good will and integrity. Plantain, ‘okrima’ sells between 500-1000 in Omuma.
The cheapest you can get in neighbouring towns of Port Harcourt, Aba, Onitsha is N2,000 per bunch. Have a you ever considered this a big deal? Our ‘udara’ though seasonal is one of the sweetest around this axis. In the near towns our type of ‘udara’ is called ‘nwanu’ which means very sweet ‘Nwannu’ in the cities sells 2 pieces for N100, while it is sold at 6 to 8 pieces for N100 in Omuma land. This translates to about 76% profit margin. ‘Ube beke’, (Avogadro pear) sells at N50 per piece in Omuma, but sells N150 in town. This again is 100% profit margin. ‘Okashi’ (coined in English hard leaf) sells at N50 per wrap in Omuma but the cheapest in town is N100. ‘Ogbono’ Ariramiri is the best specie. It is one of the notable soup condiments of populous favorite.
PURSUING A CAREER
Pursuing a career will mean to look away from distractions. Social excesses are alluring and may lead to demise of focus. Those who have focus are career oriented. They are achievers. Career is one what ends up becoming in life. Examples of career includes trading, teaching, accounting, Law, medicine, administration, engineering and lots more. Whatever anyone wants to become in life depends on your extent of focus towards your goal.
VOLUNTEERISM
Volunteerism is the cement that holds focus. You volunteer towards your line of career or destiny. Start by doing it free. Avoid quick money. Create good will first. Gain experience and expertise and money will come naturally. So many students in the Industrial Training stage haggles for where they will be paid ‘salary’. This should not be. Every man was poor before becoming rich. Yes, every man was born naked, which is the starkest point of poverty. Volunteerism is like King David’s story in the Bible. He killed the bear before attempting to Goliath’s throat. We should be appreciated or criticized by others on others, community before launching out.
RETIREMENT
Somebody should not say it is too early to talk about this subject as youths. Those who have focus plan on time on when and how they will retire. They do not forge age to elongate retirements. They believe that a journey of 1,000km begins with a step in the right direction. Focus is about drafting your life journey from start to finish. Focus is the atlas of life. It keeps on no matter what. It does not stop when the destination has not being attained.
Retirement may include how one lives in the later days of life. Retirement may not necessary have to do with age. Sometimes unforeseen circumstances, accident, deformity might force one to retire outside age. The good will you created while active will definitely determine your next chance of life.
CONCLUSION
In the words of Abraham Lincoln, it is difficult to make a man miserable, who thinks worthy of himself and claims kindred to the great God who made him. This exemplifies the scriptural maxim, ‘looking unto Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith’ by Paul the apostle. He got his evangelical focus and preached to the world before his exit. This is the energy propelling the man or woman, boy or girl of focus. He is not deterred. The central focus in life is you, God, and others. It is a true sequence since it is you that must first activate the other two – God and others.
We can conquer the world. Omuma youths have it all. Our boys are handsome and our girls very beautiful. You are also intelligent. Handsomeness and beauty is money; if put into use in cogent and reputable commercial sense.
