LAST BORN PRIVILEGES. By Lesley Chimezie
One time we were on Christmas vacation in Bonny, my maternal home, and my sister and I got into one of those useless and baseless fights that have no head or tail. Well, in the course of the fight, we pushed over some stacked up crates of malt and soda that our granny was selling. No less than 3 crates of drinks were damaged and only a few bottles survived.
At that point, our mum jumped in and rooted out her rod of correction to beat the spirit of fighting and destruction out of us. But our grandma stepped in just time to rebuke her. Granny warned her not to lay a finger on us. Instead she rewarded us with plates of fresh fish and asked us to share the remaining bottles that did not break. That was after she made sure that neither of us was injured in the fight.
Those who had tough parents can relate to this.
If you grew up with strict or disciplinarian parents then you would agree with me that your parents strictness softened with time. You can attest that the way they were tough on the older children wasn't the same way they were/are with the last born. And if they have grandchildren you would notice that all that strictness magically melts away where the grand kids are concerned.
You see the grandchildren or last born do certain things and you expect the big hammer to land on them as it used to land on you when you did similar things. Instead you see the same tough and strict parents reacting with gentle and tender love. And you're left in bewilderment.
WELL, THAT WAS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED WITH ADAM IN EDEN.
Man is (so far) God's last born. Before the recreation of the earth and the creation of man, many other civilisations existed. Finally, God made man as the last born of all His creations. To the surprise of all the others, God chose to make this particular being in His own image and likeness. The very and only creation to carry the Father's image and likeness. Then He went on to give man total and absolute dominion over this new realm that He had created.
As if that wasn't enough, the Father, Whom other spirits dread to come close to, would leave His Throne and come down to fellowship with this new being.
Finally, one day this new creature disobeyed the Father. I can imagine the suspense in the spirit realm as all the other creatures anticipated the destruction and annihilation of man. Because in their realm there exists no such thing as mercy or grace or forgiveness. In the spirit realm all they know is 'mess around and find out'. All they knew God for was His Holiness and justice. For them it is instant judgement.
So they held their breath as the Father came down to meet man and finish him. But instead of judgement, God's first reaction to man's disobedience was LOVE, COMPASSION & MERCY.
Adam who sinned was the one running from God while God came down from His holy Throne to see him. God asked him "Adam where are you?" And instead of answering with his location, Adam's response was to condemn himself. "I heard you coming so I went to hide because I was naked."
But instead of joining to condemn him, God took an animal, used its blood to cover Adam's sin and its skin to make clothes for them.
The angels and other spirits must have had their mouths open in utter shock. They couldn't believe what they were seeing. They had to find out from the Father. So they lamented
"WHAT ARE HUMAN BEINGS, THAT YOU THINK OF THEM; MERE MORTALS, THAT YOU CARE FOR THEM? YET YOU MADE THEM INFERIOR ONLY TO YOURSELF; YOU CROWNED THEM WITH GLORY AND HONOR. [Psalms 8:4-5 GNT]
They were so surprised because they had never seen this side of the Father. A side of tender love, kindness and mercy. A side revealed only for man, the last born of Yahweh's creation.
It is a side of Him that is still open to us even today. God does not want to destroy you. God's first reaction to your son is love and mercy. The Blood of Jesus is there to wash you clean. Stop running from Him. You are His last born. Come back and He will cover you again.
Destruction will only come when you continue to reject Him and His love for you.
