Olusegun Obasanjo and his letters.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo appears to have acquired a new skill since leaving office a little above eight years ago.
That skill is letter writing; and he wastes no time to pen down his thoughts on issues whenever the need arises.
Of course, knowing the former president as someone who is not afraid to speak his mind, some of the issues he raises in his letters end up stirring more controversies than solutions. Example is the 18-page letter he wrote to former President Goodluck Jonathan on December 2, 2013 wherein he (Obasanjo) levelled sundry but grave allegations against Jonathan. That letter not only heated up the polity but further strained the relationship between the duo.
Just last Wednesday, another letter written by Obasanjo to National Assembly members leaked to the press. As usual, the Ota farmer was in his true colours and this time, he accused the lawmakers of fiscal irresponsibility, impunity and corruption.
He also alleged in the letter that a number of the 109 Senators and 360 members of the House of Representatives were receiving constituency allowances without maintaining their local offices as required by the law.

Clearly, the issues raised by the former president in his letter to the lawmakers are germane and the lawmakers need to come clean on them.
However, it remains to be seen if Obasanjo can absolve himself and his erstwhile administration of the allegations he leveled against the lawmakers. Can the former president, for instance, absolve himself and his administration of impunity, fiscal irresponsibility and corruption? How come the anti-graft war under his watch was branded as selective?
Not a few will forget that it was during Obasanjo’s regime that the idea of constituency project for lawmakers was mooted and legitmised. If the former president had put his feet down and rejected the matter, Nigeria could have saved the whooping sums that are yearly appropriated for these projects most of which cannot be traced, talk-less benefiting the constituents of the lawmakers. So, before the former president writes another letter, he should offer solutions not just more controversies.
