RENEGADE BUHARI.

By Lesley Chimezie

One of the many promises President Muhammadu Buhari made to Nigerians during his presidential campaign was to bring Boko haram terrorism to an end.

Considering the security challenges this group posed, many Nigerians voted him, believing he would keep his promises with his pedigree as a military man.

He told the world in an interview at the Chatham House,UK that he would lead the war from the front. He also said.

“Our soldiers have neither received the necessary support nor the required incentive to tackle this problem. Let me assure you that if I’m elected president, I vow to change that".

“We will give them adequate modern arms and ammunition, we will improve intelligence gathering… we will be tough on terrorists and tough on its root causes… in the affected areas.” “No inch of Nigerian territory will ever be in the hands of the enemy."

These statements brought hope to a lot of Nigerians. Especially when he reiterated his commitment to the fight against the insurgents during an interview with CNN's Christie Amanpour on April 2 2015, shortly after his victory at the polls.
He said:
"....we know how they started and where they are now and we will rapidly give attention to security in the country. And I believe we will effectively deal with them in two months when we get into office.”

My question is why and when did he, (President Buhari), suddenly become so committed to stopping boko haram?

It is not news that he has always been a sympathiser of the Islamic extremists.
In fact in 2012, about a year he lost the presidential election to former president Goodluck Jonathan, President Muhammadu Buhari was chosen by the sect as a mediator on its behalf in a proposed dialogue with the federal government.

On the 3rd of June 2013, Buhari in an interview with international media house (BBC), categorically stated the ongoing war against the terror group was "INJUSTICE TO THE NORTH".
He said that instead of providing presidential jets to carry the terrorists to Abuja for negotiations and settlement by government, the Islamists were being killed.
Also in a Ramadan message delivered by his spokesman Garba Shehu, on the 15th of June 2015, Buhari called the worlds deadliest terror group "his misguided brothers".

With all these facts, it is obvious that President Buhari has strong sympathy for this blood thirsty killing machine. Let us also not forget the President Buhari is also a Fulani and a core believer in the Islamic ways. (just like the terrorists).

If all these are true, why then would he suddenly turn his back against "his misguided brothers"?
Why has he joined the "infidels" in fighting against the army of the caliphate that is "doing Allah's will"?
Why is he more concerned with "technically and militarily" defeating them rather than flying them in presidential jets and sending them abroad to acquire skills?
Has he betrayed his people? After using boko haram to gain sympathy from the north who gave 95% of the votes that brought him into Aso Rock.

Is Buhari a betrayer, a traitor to the north? Did he mean any of the things he said about them, or were they just rungs in his ladder to Aso Rock?
Did he just fulfil the popular saying that you can only truly know a man's character when you give him power?

Or did he simply do the RENEGADE on his people?

These questions have been bugging my mind. I wonder if I'll ever get an answer.
